It functions as a soluble decoy that sequesters TGF-β superfamily ligands — myostatin (GDF-8), activin A/B, and GDF-11 — preventing them from engaging cell-surface ActRIIB. Because it intercepts multiple negative regulators of muscle mass at once, it is studied in preclinical muscle-biology models and to probe the combined contribution of ActRIIB ligands to muscle homeostasis and the SMAD2/3 axis.
