In preclinical (in vitro and animal) cancer research it is studied for a non-apoptotic mechanism: it reportedly binds HDM-2 anomalously expressed in the plasma membrane of cancer cells, where the p53 segment adopts an HDM-2-binding conformation, inducing transmembrane pore formation and membranolysis selectively in HDM-2-membrane-positive cancer cells while reportedly sparing normal cells. It has been investigated in preclinical leukemia/AML and solid-tumor models. All such findings are from cell and animal research, not clinical efficacy.
