It is a widely cited tool compound in cellular-senescence research. Senescent cells are reported to depend on elevated FOXO4 to sequester p53 and evade apoptosis; FOXO4-DRI is investigated for competitively disrupting this interaction, releasing p53 and selectively driving senescent cells toward apoptosis in preclinical systems while reportedly sparing healthy dividing cells. Introduced in a landmark 2017 Cell study.
