The peptide binds copper(II) with high affinity, and the complex is investigated as a vehicle that may modulate cellular copper availability while keeping the metal redox-silenced. In preclinical and in vitro work it is examined for influence on fibroblast activity, collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis, and the expression of a broad set of tissue-repair genes; researchers also study its interactions with growth factors and antioxidant enzymes.
